Mount Qaf, or Qaf-Kuh, also spelled Cafcuh and Kafkuh (Persian: قافکوه), or Jabal Qaf, also spelled Djebel Qaf (Arabic: جبل قاف); Koh-i-Qaf, also spelled Koh-Qaf and Kuh-i-Qaf or Kuh-e Qaf (Persian: کوہ قاف); or Kaf Dağı in Turkish is a legendary mountain in the popular mythology of the Middle East.
The caves are centered around a prominent rock structure known as "satbaran", which features seven carved openings referred to as sath barr (lit. ' seven doors '). [1] [2] Local legends, citing ancestral accounts, associate these openings with seven different routes, including a supposed underground passage which was used by Russians, as well as six other routes leading to different countries.

In 1980, the NSF funded the study of a large interferometer led by MIT (Paul Linsay, Peter Saulson, Rainer Weiss), and the following year, Caltech constructed a 40-meter prototype (Ronald Drever and Stan Whitcomb). The MIT study established the feasibility of interferometers at a 1-kilometer scale with adequate sensitivity.
