After discovery of oil in the Assam state of India in late 1880s, the first oil refinery was set up at Digboi. Digboi Refinery was commissioned in 1901. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) acquired the Government of India's shares in KRL in March 2001. Consequent to the merger Order dated 18 August 2006 issued by Ministry of Company Affairs, the refinery has been amalgamated with Bharat Petroleum Corporation, henceforth to be known as BPCL-Kochi Refinery.
It owns and operates Bina Refinery, located at Bina in the Sagar of the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. The company was incorporated as a joint venture between Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and Oman Oil Company Ltd (now OQ). Since 2021, it is a wholly owned subsidiary of BPCL.
In August 1977, the company was given its permanent name, viz. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). The installed capacity of 5.25 million tonnes per year was increased to 6 million tonnes per year in 1985. The present refining capacity of the refinery is 6.9 million tonnes per year.
