Matalan Retail Ltd is a British clothing, homeware and toy retailer based in Knowsley, Merseyside, founded by John Hargreaves in 1985. In August 1988, its operations director at the time, Duncan Sullivan, transformed Matalan into an out-of-town warehouse-style, membership-only cash-and-carry business, inspired by Sam's Club in the United States.
The expansion also introduced a retail park with retailers Homebase, Matalan, Index and JJB Sports. The site was expanded again in 2004 with Debenhams opening as the main tenant in a 150,000 sq ft extension of the centre on October 21, and again in 2018 with Nando's and Five Guys opening. [4] [5]
The retailer was founded by owner Tom Morris in 1976 as a single store called Home and Bargain [2] in Old Swan, Liverpool when he was aged 21. The name was changed to Home Bargains in 1995, but is still colloquially referred to by its original name in the Merseyside area.
