In September 1996, it exhibited Yeong Gill Kim, a Korean artist living in New York, whose work in black and white acrylic, showed crowds of small figures in smudged landscapes, showing "on the conservative end of the spectrum in this case, that contemporary Asian artists are drawing ideas from a blend of Western and non-Western traditions." [6]
Scratchboard or scraperboard or scratch art [1] is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark ink to reveal a white or colored layer beneath. The technique uses sharp knives and tools for engraving into the scratchboard, which is usually cardboard covered in a thin layer of white China clay coated with black India ink.
She is best known for her striking black and white paintings of Garnkiny doo Wardel (Moon and Star) [3] based on the Ngarranggarni story passed down from her parents, but focussing on Ngarranggarniny which is when the Dreaming ancestors laid down and became the landscape of the East Kimberley in Western Australia.
She describes the contrast between the two clays as "the smooth, creamy beauty of porcelain and the gritty toughness of black stoneware" that culminate in a crisp and sophisticated design. [ 1 ] Noted ceramics collector Preston Fitzgerald praised Hogge's "delicate, laboriously intensive, detailed work" at Ceramics Art London 2019.
