CSS image replacement is a Web design technique that uses Cascading Style Sheets to replace text on a Web page with an image containing that text. It is intended to keep the page accessible to users of screen readers, text-only web browsers, or other browsers where support for images or style sheets is either disabled or nonexistent, while allowing the image to differ between styles.
For example, users of the Classic skin will have the links at the top of the page covered up by the title. Alternate title headers are headers that cover up the default header at the top of a page. The default title header has the name of the page in big bold letters.
Images with text should generally use a caption and the thumb (thumbnail) option; the default results in a display 220 pixels wide (170 pixels if the upright option is used), except for those logged-in users who have set a different default in their user preferences. Images in which a small region of detail is important (but cropping to that region is unacceptable) may need to be larger than normal, but upright=1.8 should usually be the largest value for images floated beside text. Lead images should usually use upright=1.35 at most.
For large amounts of caption text, use text-align:left; to make it left-justified. Alternate text is optional but recommended. See Alternate text for images for hints on writing good alternate text. To have some text to the left of an image, and then some more text below the image, then put in a single <br clear="all">.

In the examples above, the size of the image is scaled based on each user's default image size, which can be changed at Special:Preferences. Setting image size in pixels, such as "250px", would override the user's preference and display the image as 250px wide for all users who view that image on that page.
