The Mindanao State University–General Santos was created six years after the establishment of the Mindanao State University Main Campus Marawi City on September 1, 1961. It is one of the state universities of the Philippines with the aim of providing education for the different strategic locations across the island of Mindanao.

In 2019, the Bislig Campus of the University of Southeastern Philippines was formally turned over to the Surigao del Sur State University making it its seventh campus. On July 30, 2021, President Rodrigo Duterte has signed the renaming of the university from Surigao del Sur State University to North Eastern Mindanao State University. [4]
In 1988 MSU Naawan was formally organized as a distinct autonomous unit of the MSU System pursuant to Memorandum Orders No. 3 and no. 45 and BOR resolution 92, Series of 1988. On July 21, 1988, the first Executive Director for the Naawan campus was elected by the Board of Regents of the University.
