Aberdeenshire Council is the local authority for Aberdeenshire, one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. The council has been under no overall control since its creation in 1996. It is based at Woodhill House , which is outside its own territory in the neighbouring Aberdeen City council area.

It is the council area's largest settlement, with a population of 18,537 at the 2011 Census. [5] It is the largest fishing port in the United Kingdom for total landings by UK vessels, according to a 2019 survey. [6]
Aberdeenshire has a rich prehistoric and historical heritage. It is the locus of a large number of Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeological sites, including Longman Hill, Kempstone Hill, Catto Long Barrow and Cairn Lee. The area was settled in the Bronze Age by the Beaker culture, who arrived from the south around 2000–1800 BC. [7]
