Capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) or thyristor ignition is a type of automotive electronic ignition system which is widely used in outboard motors, motorcycles, lawn mowers, chainsaws, small engines, gas turbine-powered aircraft, and some cars.
The point (contact breaker) ignition system was replaced by the capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) system (1989 in Japan) and a little later in other countries. By 1993 Honda was using only CDI ignition systems for all of its motorcycles.
The RD400C was the first motorcycle by a major manufacturer to be fitted with cast wheels. [2] In 1978 the RD400E was fitted with a capacitor discharge electronic ignition (CDI) unit, as well as thinner spoked cast wheels, a new foot peg position, and some minor engine modifications with revisions to cylinder porting and carburettor specs.
In 1981, a Delco Electronics ECU was used by several Chevrolet and Buick engines to control their fuel system (a closed-loop carburetor) and ignition system. [10] By 1988, Delco Electronics was the leading producer of engine management systems, producing over 28,000 ECUs per day.
The contact breaker is operated by an engine-driven cam.On an engine with a distributor, the contact breaker can be found beneath the distributor cap.The position of the contact breaker is set so that it opens (and hence generates a spark) at exactly the optimum moment to ignite the fuel/air mixture.

Ignition systems moved from magneto in the 1950s to battery-coil-contact breaker points, and these were increasingly superseded by Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) from the 1980s. Small, single-cylinder motorcycles abandoned the flywheel magneto system with contact breakers to similar flywheel driven solid-state systems at about the same time.
An ignition switch, starter switch or start switch is a Key switch in the control system of a motor vehicle that activates the main electrical systems for the vehicle. In vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, the switch provides power to the starter solenoid and the ignition system components (including the engine control unit and ...
