Patiala Locomotive Works (PLW) (formerly Diesel Loco Modernization Works (DMW)) is a production unit of the Indian Railways located at Patiala in the Indian state of Punjab. It was set up in the year 1981 as "Diesel Component Works" (DCW) to meet the demand of maintaining the Railway's diesel locomotives. [3]
Being the first locomotives to be built by Diesel-Loco Modernization Works, they have certain features which are not found on regular locomotives in Indian Railways such as extensive use of marker and indication lamps and a cab structure inspired by the ones found on American locomotives like EMD SD40-2. The Indian locomotive class WDG-3A is a class of diesel–electric locomotive that was developed in 1994 by Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW),Varanasi for Indian Railways. The model name stands for broad-gauge (W), Diesel (D), Goods traffic (G) engine, 3,100 hp (3A) locomotive. They entered service on 18 July 1995.
Meanwhile, Diesel Loco Modernization Works (erstwhile Diesel Modification Works which again was known as Diesel Component Works) in Patiala started rebuilding the existing WDM-2 locomotives, which had reached midlife, with upgraded power-packs. DLMW Patiala re-calibrates the power-pack and upgrades the output power rating to 3100HP. [4]
Later a number of modifications were made and a few sub-classes were created. These include WDM-2A, WDM-2B and WDM-3A (formerly WDM-2C). A few WDM-2 locomotives had been rebuilt by Diesel Loco Modernisation Works (DLMW) in Patiala, Punjab. [15] These are fitted with DBRs produced by Daulat Ram Engineering. [16]
During World War II, large numbers of 2-8-2 locomotives were acquired from the United States and Canada and classified AWD and CWD. The Baldwin Locomotive Works adapted the USATC S160 Class locomotive design for India, and it became class AWC. [37] Sixty broad-gauge locomotives were built in 1944 as part of an order of 180 S160 engines.
Diesel and electric locomotives have gradually replaced steam locomotives. The number of passenger coaches in service has almost doubled. The wagon stock holding is roughly 2.5 times that in 1951. Financial limitations, however, did not permit development of maintenance facilities compatible with the growth of rolling stock.
