[6] The thirty-third story in Der Edelstein by Ulrich Boner is a variant. [7] A Romanian variant, “Der alte Mann und der Wolf,” ("The Old Man and the Wolf") was published by Heinrich von Wlislocki. [8] "The Disobedient Kids" is a Czecho-Slovak variant. [9] A variant has been reported to be present in Moroccan folktale collections. [10]
In some the released animal is a crocodile, in some a snake, [5] a tiger [6] and in others a wolf. Folklorist Joseph Jacobs stated that the tale can be found in early Indian sources. [ 7 ] Some variants are very old, going back at least to the Panchatantra or Fables of Bidpai [ citation needed ] and the Jataka tales .
The tale was collected by Édouard Jacouttet from the Basotho people, and published in 1895, with the title Khoédi-Séfoubeng. [1] His book was translated into English as The treasury of Ba-suto lore (1908), and referred to the tale as Ngoana ea Khoeli-Sefubeng. [2]

"The Six Swans" (German: Die sechs Schwäne) is a German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm in Grimm's Fairy Tales in 1812 (KHM 49). [1] [2] It is of Aarne–Thompson type 451 ("The Maiden Who Seeks Her Brothers"), commonly found throughout Europe.
The story is very similar to other European folk tales and fairy tales about a man with very talented servants, such as How Six Made Their Way in the World, Long, Broad and Sharpsight, The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship, How the Hermit Helped to Win the King's Daughter, The Clever Little Tailor and one of the stories in Baron Munchhausen.
