The river's navigable lower course was the original route of the Portuguese invasion of northern Angola. The Capanda Dam in Malanje Province was finished in 2004, providing hydroelectric power to the region and assisting in its irrigation. The Cambambe Dam and the Lauca Dam were also constructed on the river.

Rising in the Lunda plateau, the river forms a deep valley. It is 1,100 kilometres (680 mi) long from its source to its confluence with Congo River, of which 855 kilometres (531 mi) lies in Angola. [1] [2] The river drains a total catchment area of 263,500 square kilometres (101,700 sq mi). Its right bank tributaries are the Wamba and Kwilu rivers.
The Cuando River (or Kwando in the non-colonial spelling) is a river in south-central Africa flowing through Angola and Namibia's Caprivi Strip and into the Linyanti Swamp on the northern border of Botswana. [3] Below the swamp, the river is called the Linyanti River and, farther east, the Chobe River, [4] before it flows into the Zambezi River.
The extreme north of the province is covered with savannah, while the southern part is largely dry savannah. The main rivers are the Cuanza River in the southwest and Kwango River in the northeast, and there is a mountainous area known as the Malanje Plateau. [4] The Cuije River and Cuanza flow in the vicinity of Cangandala National Park. [5]
The river is 300 kilometres (190 mi) long with a drainage area of 7,370 square kilometres (2,850 sq mi). There is a large reservoir called Kiminha on the Bengo. [ 1 ] There are several small lakes on the lower 90 kilometres (56 mi) of the river floodplain including Lakes Panguila, Quilunda and Lalama.
