The U.S. state of West Virginia has 55 counties. Fifty of them existed at the time of the Wheeling Convention in 1861, during the American Civil War, when those counties seceded from the Commonwealth of Virginia to form the new state of West Virginia. McLennan County was created by the Texas Legislature in 1850 out of Milam County. The county seat, Waco, had been founded as an outpost of the Texas Rangers. It was laid out by George B. Erath, and was known by 1850 as Waco Village. In the 1880s, pharmacist Charles Alderton developed the carbonated beverage that became known as Dr Pepper.
McGregor is located in western McLennan County and extends westward into Coryell County, surrounding McGregor Industrial Park, a former Naval Weapons Reserve Plant. [ 5 ] U.S. Route 84 passes through the city center, leading northeast 17 miles (27 km) to Waco and west 20 miles (32 km) to Gatesville .
Bruceville-Eddy is located in southwestern McLennan County and is situated along Interstate 35, 18 miles (29 km) south of Waco and 16 miles (26 km) north of Temple. [5] Access is available from Exit 315 (the Eddy or southern end of town) and Exit 318 (the Bruceville or northern end).
