A solar flare is a relatively intense, localized emission of electromagnetic radiation in the Sun's atmosphere. Flares occur in active regions and are often, but not always, accompanied by coronal mass ejections, solar particle events, and other eruptive solar phenomena. The occurrence of solar flares varies with the 11-year solar cycle.

Solar cycle 25 is the current solar cycle, the 25th since 1755, when extensive recording of solar sunspot activity began. It began in December 2019 with a minimum smoothed sunspot number of 1.8. [ 2 ]
The flare comes amid increasing solar activity that has brought a run of intense space weather in recent days and weeks. Only a day before, the Sun had released a slightly less powerful but still ...
A solar flare from a sunspot region associated with this activity and preceding this period produced the then largest flare detected during the Space Age at about X20 (the first event to saturate spaceborne monitoring instruments, this was exceeded in 2003) but was directed away from Earth. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of a solar flare on Oct. 1, 2024. NASA had a busy start to October, as the agency announced that the sun emitted several major solar flares ...
The exaggerated solar flare activity creates more disturbance, measured on a scale called a K-index, which ranges from 0 to 9, with 9 having the most activity. Friday is expected to have a K-index ...
The solar storms of May 2024 were a series of powerful solar storms with extreme solar flares and geomagnetic storm components that occurred from 10–13 May 2024 during solar cycle 25. The geomagnetic storm was the most powerful to affect Earth since March 1989 , [ a ] and produced aurorae at far more equatorial latitudes than usual in both ...
