Robert Taylor Homes was a public housing project in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois from 1962 to 2007. The second largest housing project in the United States, it consisted of 28 virtually identical high-rises, set out in a linear plan for two miles (3 km), with the high-rises regularly configured in a horseshoe shape of three in each block.
The building as it originally appeared. The building was constructed in 1927 and formally opened on June 29. [1] [2] Its construction was due to the efforts of the Chicago Builders' Building Corporation, which was composed of a variety of entities in the construction trade such as companies, individuals, and trade groups. [1]
The Chicago Building is an example of Chicago School architecture. Beginning in the early 1880s, architectural pioneers of the Chicago School explored steel-frame construction and, in the 1890s, the use of large areas of plate glass. These were among the first modern skyscrapers.
