Despite the name, SOCES is located in the Tarzana section of Los Angeles on the former campus of Sequoia Junior High School. (Prior to 1980, the campus was located at the site of present-day Sherman Oaks Elementary School in the Sherman Oaks section of Los Angeles). The school is a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
LACES was founded as the "Center for Enriched Studies" (minus the "LA") in September 1977 as the first magnet school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. [5] It was the first school created as part of the District's voluntary integration program. The founding principal was David Peha.
Community is among the oldest magnet schools in LAUSD. It is racially and ethnically diverse, and its students consistently receive among the highest scores in standardized testing within LAUSD. [2] In 1999 Martha Groves of the Los Angeles Times said that Community was a "high-achieving, innovative elementary school."
It is currently under the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles Unified School District and is part of the Middle College National Consortium. [ 3 ] Under the middle college/ dual enrollment program, students attend college courses at LAHC alongside high school classes, and can accumulate credits towards one or multiple associate degrees .
