The atomic nucleus is a quantum n-body system. The internal motion of nucleons within the nucleus is non-relativistic, and their behavior is governed by the Schrödinger equation . Nucleons are considered to be pointlike, without any internal structure.

In nuclear physics, a Borromean nucleus is an atomic nucleus comprising three bound components in which any subsystem of two components is unbound. [1] This has the consequence that if one component is removed, the remaining two comprise an unbound resonance , so that the original nucleus is split into three parts.
For nuclei having two or more valence nucleons (i.e. nucleons outside a closed shell), a residual two-body interaction must be added. This residual term comes from the part of the inter-nucleon interaction not included in the approximative average potential.
