  2. Power dividers and directional couplers - Wikipedia

In a real directional coupler, however, the insertion loss consists of a combination of coupling loss, dielectric loss, conductor loss, and VSWR loss. Depending on the frequency range, coupling loss becomes less significant above 15 dB coupling where the other losses constitute the majority of the total loss. The theoretical insertion loss (dB ...

  3. Insertion loss - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insertion_loss

In telecommunications, insertion loss is the loss of signal power resulting from the insertion of a device in a transmission line or optical fiber and is usually expressed in decibels (dB). If the power transmitted to the load before insertion is P T and the power received by the load after insertion is P R , then the insertion loss in decibels ...

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilkinson_power_divider

Network theorem governs that a divider cannot satisfy all three conditions (being matched, reciprocal and loss-less) at the same time. Wilkinson divider satisfies the first two (matched and reciprocal), and cannot satisfy the last one (being loss-less). Hence, there is some loss occurring in the network.

  5. Attenuator (electronics) - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attenuator_(electronics)

Loss means the ratio of power entering the input port of the pad divided by the power absorbed by the load. Insertion Loss means the ratio of power that would be delivered to the load if the load were directly connected to the source divided by the power absorbed by the load when connected through the pad.

  6. Coupling loss - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupling_loss

Coupling loss, also known as connection loss, is the loss that occurs when energy is transferred from one circuit, circuit element, or medium to another. Coupling loss is usually expressed in the same units —such as watts or decibels —as in the originating circuit element or medium.

The ratio part of the insertion loss formula has recently been changed by a string of IPs from 1-P 3 /P 1 to 1-P 2 /P 1. I suspect they really intended to change it to P 2 /P 1. Even this is wrong, the expresion is supposed to be for the ideal insertion loss caused by coupling off power P 3.
