Joseph White Brooks (1901 – September 20, 1972) was an American fly fisherman and popular writer about the sport of fly fishing during the mid-20th century. [1] He was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901 and died in Rochester, Minnesota in 1972.
The show has its roots in a 20-minute segment depicting Curt Gowdy and Joe Brooks fly fishing in the Andes Mountains in Argentina in 1964. The segment appeared on Wide World of Sports and immediately was spun off into its own series airing at 3 PM EST on Sundays January through March on ABC. [2] The show's first episode was on January 31, 1965.

Gary LaFontaine (May 12, 1945 – January 4, 2002) was a well-known fly fisherman and author. His books include Caddisflies, The Dry Fly: New Angles, Fly Fishing the Mountain Lakes, and Trout Flies: Proven Patterns. He died of Lou Gehrig's disease.

Bobby Dunbar disappeared during a fishing trip. A child found in the custody of William Cantwell Walters of Mississippi eight months later was ruled to be Bobby Dunbar by a court-appointed arbiter, and Walters was found guilty of kidnapping. The child grew up as Bobby Dunbar, had four children of his own, and died in 1966.
