Gila Bend (/ ˌ h iː l ə ˈ b ɛ n d /; O'odham: Hila Wi:n), founded in 1872, is a town in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States.The town is named for an approximately 90-degree bend in the Gila River, which is near the community's current location. [4]
In 1960, the Army Corps of Engineers completed construction of the Painted Rock Dam on the Gila River. Flood waters impounded by the dam periodically inundated approximately 10,000 acres (40 km 2) of the Gila Bend Reservation. Between AD 800 and 1200 it was an important Hohokam settlement at the great bend of the Gila River.
