Nurul Islam (1 April 1929 [1] – 9 May 2023) was a Bangladeshi economist, philanthropist, and politician. [2] [3] Islam is famous for his contributions during the independence war of Bangladesh, as well as for his pivotal role in the economy and foreign affairs during the 1970's as cabinet minister and deputy chairman of the Planning Commission.
His ancestors settled in Jessore where they propagated Islam to locals with his grandfather's great-grandfather, Mawlana Abdul Awwal al-Ghazi, relocating the family to Faridpur. [3] Ruhul Amin's grandfather's grandfather, Chand Ghazi, was a student of Syed Ahmad Shaheed and took part in the Battle of Balakot against the Sikhs .
He was born in 1551 (958 AH) in Delhi, hence the suffix Dehlavi to his name. In 1587 (996 AH), he made the pilgrimage to Mecca, where he stayed remained for the next three years studying hadith and Sufism under various scholars.
On 26 September 1897, Sir Nicholas Beatson-Bell, the district commissioner of Backergunge, organised a conference at the Barisal Zilla School in which Nawab Sirajul Islam and Hafiz Ahmad Jaunpuri delivered speeches on the importance of establishing the Bell Islamia Hostel.
