1-nitropropane is produced industrially by the reaction of propane and nitric acid. This reaction forms four nitroalkanes: nitromethane , nitroethane , 1-nitropropane, and 2-nitropropane . 1-nitropropane is also a byproduct of the process for making 2-nitropropane, which is done by vapour phase nitration of propane.
The reaction produces fragments from the parent alkane, creating a diverse mixture of products; for instance, nitromethane, nitroethane, 1-nitropropane, and 2-nitropropane are produced by treating propane with nitric acid in the gas phase (e.g. 350–450 °C and 8–12 atm).
During this time period more than 100,000 CAIS units were produced by all branches of the military. [1] CAIS were declared obsolete in 1971 and systematically recalled from military installations during two operations. [2] The first recall operation, Operation Set Consolidation I (SETCON I), was in 1978; SETCON II followed on in 1980. [2]

2-Nitropropane is used as a solvent or additive in inks, paints, adhesives, varnishes, polymers, resins, fuel, and coatings. [6] It is also used as a feedstock for other industrial chemicals, [ 6 ] and also in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals such as phentermine , chlorphentermine , and teclozan .

In the United States military, the Mark I NAAK, or MARK I Kit, ("Nerve Agent Antidote Kit") is a dual-chamber autoinjector: Two anti-nerve agent drugs—atropine sulfate and pralidoxime chloride—each in injectable form, constitute the kit. The kits are only effective against the nerve agents tabun (GA), sarin (GB), soman (GD) and VX.
