The Burlington County Library (BCLS) is a public library system that serves 37 out of the 40 municipalities of Burlington County, New Jersey. The central headquarters is in Westampton . The library collection contains approximately 770,000 volumes, and its annual circulation was 1.8 million in 2005. [ 1 ]

The first of libraries built with Carnegie funding was the former Main Library. Alexander King, resident of the city and child-hood friend of Andrew Carnegie, orchestrated the first grant to be offered in New Jersey made January 18, 1900. [3] [4] [5] Originally it was of source of controversy.
All of Bergen County's public libraries are members of the BCCLS, along with 16 library systems from other counties with 11 in Essex, 4 in Hudson, and a single one Passaic county. [ 6 ] [ 7 ] A patron's hometown library card is honored at all participating libraries.
The building is one of New Jersey's 36 Carnegie libraries, constructed with a grant of $15,000 made March 16, 1915 by the Carnegie Corporation and opened in 1916. [3] [4] Engraved about its entrance is Edgewater Free Library. In 2009, the library was listed on the state and national registers of historic places. [1]

A majority of Monmouth County towns pay county library taxes and their residents are entitled to free library cards in the county library system. The remaining twelve municipalities have their own libraries that are not part of the county system. Instances of such libraries include the Freehold Public Library and the Belmar Public Library. [1]
