Setauket was founded in 1655, the first settlement in what would become the town of Brookhaven. Prior to the 2020 census, the community was part of the Setauket-East Setauket CDP. The area was split in 2020 into two separate CDPs: Setauket and East Setauket [3] despite many in the community still considering it one locality.

East Setauket is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) on Long Island, in the town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census. Before that it was part of the Setauket-East Setauket CDP. The community is in northwestern Suffolk County, in the northwest part of the town of Brookhaven.
As of the census [6] of 2010, there were 792 people, 286 households, and 224 families residing in the village. The racial makeup of the village was 92.6% White, 1.3% African American, 3.3% Asian, 1.3% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races.
Coram is the oldest settlement in the central part of the town of Brookhaven. Its early name was "Wincoram", perhaps the name of a Native American who lived in the area as late as 1703. The first European settler in the area was likely William Satterly, who sought permission to open a tavern to cater to travelers in 1677. [3]
Sherwood-Jayne House is a historic home and related buildings located at East Setauket in Suffolk County, New York. The property encompasses a two-story dwelling, as well as five accessory buildings, mature planting, split-rail and picket fences, and other landscape features. The construction dates of the house spans from about 1730 to 1940.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.6 km 2), all land. [2]New York State Route 25 (Middle Country Road) passes through the community and is the primary commercial thoroughfare.
