Robert de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Leicester, Count of Meulan (c. 1040/1050 – 5 June 1118), also known as Robert of Meulan, was a powerful Norman nobleman, one of the very few proven Companions of William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, and was revered as one of the wisest men of his age.
Robert was an English nobleman of Norman-French ancestry. He was the son of Robert de Beaumont, Count of Meulan and 1st Earl of Leicester, and Elizabeth de Vermandois, and the twin brother of Waleran de Beaumont. [2]
Robert was the son of Amicia de Gael and Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester, [2] a staunch supporter of Henry II, and he inherited from his father large estates in England and Normandy. When the younger Henry revolted in April 1173, Robert went to his castle at Breteuil in Normandy.
