The Solar Car Challenge is an annual solar-powered car race for high school students. The event attracts teams from around the world, but mostly from American high schools. The race was first held in 1995. Each event is the end product of a two-year education cycle launched by the Winston Solar Car Team.
The prototype was entirely designed and fabricated by the second generation of the team. It is a much improved version of the first car and was launched in August 2017. The car was India's lone entry to the World Solar Challenge, 2017. The team working on the project consists of 25 students from various departments of RVCE. Specifications:
A race crew of approximately 20 students is selected to race the vehicle in competition. These students' function is similar to that of a pit crew in professional auto racing. As of 2024, UM's solar car project has won the North American championship ten times.
