The Citadel of Huy (French: Citadelle de Huy) or the Fort of Huy (French: Fort de Huy), known locally as The Castle (Walloon: Li Tchestia), is a fortress located in the Walloon city of Huy in the province of Liège, Belgium. [1] The fort occupies a high position in the town, overlooking the strategic Meuse river.
The County of Huy (Latin comitatus Hoiensis) was a comital jurisdiction of Lotharingia during the early Middle Ages, centred on the town of Huy and its citadel overlooking the Meuse. The county probably originated in the late ninth century as a division of the County of Hesbaye .
On 8 April 2008, the citadels of Dinant, Namur and Huy were officially proposed as candidates to be UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the reference number 5365. After discussions, it was decided to propose Namur alone, possibly in combination with Dinant.

The walls of the Citadel form a square with sides of 2,500 meters. The outer stone wall is one meter thick, five meters high and is separated from the inner wall by dirt fill. The distance between the walls varies from 75 meters to 17.5 meters. Half the population lived within the Citadel in 1 or 2 story houses surrounded by stone walls.
