Mālia is a Hawaiian-style wooden racing canoe crafted by James Takeo Yamasaki.The canoe was hewn out of blonde koa wood in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, in 1933.Its wooden hull provided the founding model for all subsequent outrigger canoeing hulls, including those later molded from fiberglass. [2]

The American Canoe Association (ACA) was founded in 1880. In 1883, ACA Secretary Charles Neide and retired sea captain “Barnacle” Kendall paddled and sailed over three thousand miles from Lake George, New York to Pensacola, Florida. In 1886 the ACA and the RCC held the first international canoe sailing regatta.

Coconut Island, or Moku Ola is a small island in Hilo Bay, just offshore from Lili'uokalani Park and Gardens, in Hilo, off the island of Hawaii. It is a small park, and is connected to the main island via a footbridge. The island includes a large grassy field, picnic areas, restroom facilities, and a few tiny sandy beaches.
