Tyrannosaurus (/ t ɪ ˌ r æ n ə ˈ s ɔː r ə s, t aɪ-/) [a] is a genus of large theropod dinosaur.The type species Tyrannosaurus rex (rex meaning 'king' in Latin), often shortened to T. rex or colloquially T-Rex, is one of the best represented theropods.
The nickname stems from the apparent shiny dark color of the fossil bones, which occurred during fossilization by the presence of minerals in the surrounding rock; [citation needed] it was the first Tyrannosaurus rex specimen to receive a nickname, beginning a trend that continues with most major T. rex finds.
