Zapp Brannigan (voiced by Billy West) is a 25-Star general in the military of the Democratic Order Of Planets (D.O.O.P.), although his title varies. Brannigan was first seen in the episode " Love's Labours Lost in Space " as Captain of the starship Nimbus , where he imprisons Fry , Leela and Bender for violating "Brannigan's Law".
When the Zapp Brannigan role was originally cast, the creators chose Saturday Night Live alumnus and semi-frequent Simpsons voice actor Phil Hartman. When Hartman was murdered by his wife in 1998, however, the role was given to Billy West (who was already cast as Phillip Fry, Professor Farnsworth, Dr. Zoidberg, and others). [ 1 ]
Before the fake relationships are exposed, Kif calls Brannigan to the bridge; a new course Brannigan chose has endangered the ship. Brannigan pilots the ship too close to a black hole. Realizing the danger, Brannigan promotes Kif to Captain before fleeing the ship. Fry and Leela nearly kiss before they are interrupted by the ship breaking in half.
The Wongs, more unhappy with Kif than ever, call in Zapp Brannigan to resolve the situation. Brannigan, Kif, and the rest of the crew set off for the face on Mars, one of the two entrances to the Martian reservation. Brannigan botches the negotiations, and the Martians call up another dust storm, which engulfs Amy.

A message to Kif from Zapp reveals he has been made the king of a native tribe and he requests that a one-eyed queen be sent to him, specifically Leela.
The episode makes references to the typical 1950s B-Movie serials with Zapp Brannigan's dreams. [2] Zapp and Leela are in an Adam and Eve type planet and take on the roles while on the planet. [2] The Death Sphere is a reference to "Death Star" in Star Wars, [3] its creation and its name are a reference to V′Ger in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
The episode ranked highly in large part due to the character of Zapp Brannigan, particularly the Midnight Cowboy parody with Kif and Brannigan as Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, respectively. [2] In the site's 2019 reranking, several years after the show's first revival finished, "Brannigan Begin Again" only dropped to sixth. [3]
