Alton Castle was founded in stone by Bertram III de Verdun and built on a rocky precipice overlooking the River Churnet in the 12th century, [3] however the site had been fortified in wood since Saxon times. [4] The castle is also referred to in historical documents as Alton, Alverton or Aulton.

Alton (UK: / ˈ ɒ l t ən / ⓘ OL-tən) is a village in Staffordshire, England. [2] It is noted for the theme park Alton Towers, built around the site of Alton Mansion, which was owned by the Earls of Shrewsbury, [3] and designed by Augustus Pugin. [4] In the 1914 map by Whiston, there were copper works in the village. [2]
Alton Castle: Late 12th century: The castle was extended in the 13th century, and is now in ruins. The remains include part of the curtain wall, a wall tower, a gatehouse, and an oval bailey. The eastern wall tower is square and has an open back, and all that remains of the 13th-century D-shaped western wall tower are the foundations.
