Faiyum (/ f aɪ ˈ j uː m / fy-YOOM; Arabic: الفيوم, romanized: el-Fayyūm, locally [elfæjˈjuːm]) [a] is a city in Middle Egypt. Located 100 kilometres (62 miles) southwest of Cairo , in the Faiyum Oasis , it is the capital of the modern Faiyum Governorate .
The village is considered new as it was created in the 1960s by two famous Egyptian poets. [3] [4] In the 1980s, Evelyne Porret, a Swiss tourist and later potter fell in love with Egypt and the touristic village, and established a pottery school in it that played a large role in preserving Fayoum's Ancient Egyptian pottery culture. [1]
