From 1963 to 1965, State Route 85 was a 10-11 mile highway that ran entirely on surface streets from US 101 near SR 237 to SR 82 along Mathilda Avenue and Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road (later De Anza Boulevard) between SR 82 and SR 9. The segment north of I-280 was deleted in 1965 once the current northern segment of the freeway opened.
