The Alabama Baptist is a weekly newspaper that was first published on February 4, 1843, initially an independent newspaper but supported by Baptist leaders in the state. He was a leader in the Baptist church and a founder and president of the Baptist Foreign Mission Convention. Later in his life he was Dean of the Theological Department at Selma.
