Matthews Stone Company Historic District is a national historic district located in Richland Township, Monroe County, Indiana.The district encompasses five contributing buildings, one contributing site, six contributing structures, and two contributing objects associated with the Matthews Brothers Stone Company limestone business, now operated as Bybee Stone Company, Inc.
Natural stone is used as architectural stone (construction, flooring, cladding, counter tops, curbing, etc.) and as raw block and monument stone for the funerary trade. Natural stone is also used in custom stone engraving. The engraved stone can be either decorative or functional. Natural memorial stones are used as natural burial markers.
The following are approximate tallies of current listings in Pennsylvania on the National Register of Historic Places.These counts are based on entries in the National Register Information Database as of April 24, 2008 [2] and new weekly listings posted since then on the National Register of Historic Places web site. [3]
According to Marble.com, in 2016 there were 276 quarries producing natural stone in 34 states, and states producing the most granite were Texas, Massachusetts, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Georgia. [1] The term "quarry" refers also to sites producing aggregate, molding sand, or other resources besides cut stone.
The contributing site is Memorial Park, established as a burial ground in the early 19th century. Located in the district and listed separately are the Silas M. Clark House, James Mitchell House, Old Indiana County Courthouse, Indiana Borough 1912 Municipal Building, Indiana Armory, and Old Indiana County Jail and Sheriff's Office. [2]
The original section was built between 1817 and 1829, and is a 2 + 1 ⁄ 2-story, three-bay, stone building with a gable roof and massive gable chimney. It was expanded between 1905 and 1905 by John B. McCormick. At that time, a large, two-story hip and gable roofed addition was built on the rear.
