The 1998 World Cup of Golf took place 19–22 November at the Gulf Harbor Country Club in Auckland, New Zealand. It was the 44th World Cup. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event (32 teams) with each team consisting of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results.
Gulf Harbour is a suburb development some 4 km from the end of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, and 7 km from Whangaparaoa Town Centre, towards the northern end of Auckland, New Zealand. It has one of the country's largest marinas , and had, until 2023, one of the country's top golf courses, and used to be regarded as a retreat for Auckland's well-off.
It has one open (Whangaparāoa Golf Club) and one closed (as of 20 July 2023) golf club (Gulf Harbour Country Club), beaches, sporting and recreation facilities, a library, shops, businesses and public and private primary and secondary schools. The median age of the population is in the 30s-40s.
The other four are Hazeltine, Oak Hill Country Club (east), Oakland Hills Country Club (south), and Pinehurst Resort (#2). Jack Nicklaus learned to play the game at Scioto in the early 1950s, mentored by Jack Grout , [ 6 ] and Bobby Jones won the second of his four U.S. Open titles there in 1926 .
