117. Gender:Male. Location:Tempe, Arizona. Posted November 3, 2012 (edited) Over time I have become increasingly convinced that Kashmir is one of the great masterworks of Western Civilization. Yes I am a proud Zeppelin fanboy given to flights of hyperbole.
I think it's a tough decision. I like the heaviest versions of Kashmir from '75 and '77. Two good examples would be New York 2/12/75. You can hear Bonzo count it off, "1,2,3,4!" and BAM! the song erupts. LA 6/21/77, the classic '77 bootleg Listen to This Eddie, the band immediately goes into Kashmir after White Summer/Black Mountain Side.
Not the studio version, which is great enough as is, but "Kashmir" as experienced in concert. For those of you too young to remember, "Physical Graffiti" exploded on the scene like a nuclear bomb. It had been two long years since "Houses of the Holy"; the album and the tour, and expectations and demand for a new Zeppelin album were stratospheric.

Check out the the Royal Albert hall 1970 footage where he does White Summer as well, midway he goes into BMS. It's a beautiful intro to a beautiful song like "Kashmir".
Carl's analysis of Zeppelin tracks is the best I have ever seen on YouTube. All of his videos are a joy.
Richard Cole states in his book that Jimmy Page wrote the lyrics. I always assumed that Robert wrote the lyrics.

Unless its a typical commercial big-budget epic, letting movies use songs isn't bad. Indeed, all the times they've licensed their songs for movies, the context was in good taste. The Immigrant Song in Shrek was hilarious and their songs fit the theme of Almost Famous, for example. Quote.
Jason was an official member of Led Zeppelin, on Dec 10th, 2007 and the days preceding. If you notice, during the O2 show, there are big lighted letters that spell out the words "Led Zeppelin". It would appear that the gentlemen on the stage playing were billing themselves as "Led Zeppelin".
Kashmir, Out on the Tiles, Four Sticks, HHWCID, Immigrant Song do not need solos, they are perfect as it. Though Jimmy did put together a great solo for live Immigrant Song, but the solo stayed within the melody and arrangement of the song.
