    From: Katy, Texas. Posted 16 Jun 2004 8:05 am. Just picked up a CD that contains a compilation of Charlie Pride's live cuts. Got a real deal, it only cost $5.99 at Walgreens. Anyway, there is some great steel playing on this CD and I was curious who the steel player was. There are no credits given in the liner notes.

    Gene O'Neal, who was Charley's road steel player did indeed play on this one. During those wonderful years, 1966-1974, the greatest C. Pride era, I played on 23 Billboard charted songs with Charley, including 12 #1 records. The only exception during that time was the one Gene played steel on.

    There is videos on YouTube of Todd playing steel for Charley Pride on National TV. He became an airline pilot and recently retired as a Captain for United Airlines. He's just enjoying his retirement now and gigs in church and a few other places for friends. Todd was a great picker way back then and still is.

    Yes, Charley Pride is a gentleman, and 100% class act. Charley is still out there getting it done. He's awesome. Charley Pride with his wife Rozene (married in 1956), and Rolene Brumley. Gotta mention Ronnie Miller, playing pedal steel guitar with Charley for 25 years!

    Charley Pride unofficially started his music career in the late 1950s as a ballplayer with the Negro American League’s Memphis Red Sox singing and playing guitar on the team bus between ballparks. Self-taught on a guitar bought at the age 14 from Sears Roebuck, Pride would join various bands' onstage as he and the team roved the country.

    From the Buck Owens Ranch show. Walter, Those live clips are from the Buck Owens Ranch show that you posted. Done in 1968 when Tom was still a Buckaroo. Tom and Rolene bought Charlie's house in Branson and were great friends with Charlie and his wife. Rolene sold the house after Tom passed away. Tom Brumley playing a ZB.

If you listened real close, you could hear the steel once in a while. When Charley talked, you could barely hear him. Most of the time I couldn't.
