While the major-league Arizona Diamondbacks began play in 1998, their rookie league team (initially known as the Phoenix Diamondbacks) first competed in the Arizona League (AZL) in 1996, in order to jump start player development, and were the first team with a Diamondbacks affiliation to begin play. Boggs started her career in college athletics administration at Duke University and Georgia State University. At Duke, she began as a compliance coordinator in 2003, a compliance director in 2005 before being named assistant athletic director in 2007, becoming the youngest member of Duke's athletics senior staff. In 2014, Syms was elected and served as a Town Councilwoman in Paradise Valley, Arizona where she also served as Chair and member of the Paradise Valley Planning Commission from 2003 until 2013. [16] Syms served as a Judicial Clerk/Staff Attorney to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
The college athletic teams have distinguished themselves athletically with national championships in soccer (7), baseball (4), softball (2) and cross country (2). In spring 2014, in joint efforts between students and the athletic department, Yavapai College began streaming and broadcasting sporting events online via its Ustream.tv account.
