Greenwood Conservation Area in Ajax Greenwood developed as an unincorporated community within the Pickering Township . When the Regional Municipality of Durham was created in 1974, the southern part of Greenwood was merged with Ajax , and the rest of the territory remained with the Township's successor, the town (later city) of Pickering.
It was established in October 1946 via the Conservation Authorities Act, and is a member authority of Conservation Ontario. The authority is responsible for the management and protection of the Ganaraska River watershed in Northumberland County and the Regional Municipality of Durham in Southern Ontario .

The site is bordered on the west, north and east sides by residential areas, and on the south side by a railway line. [1] The yard contains 5 buildings, two of which are the General Overhaul and Repair Shop (a.k.a. Greenwood Shop) with a floor space of 185,000 square feet (17,200 m 2), and the carhouse for inspection, minor repairs and washing. [2]
