    Inherited my grandfathers S&W38special Looks like a K frame 10-5. The number on butt of the grip is in the 360k range. There is also a number under the cylinder 80k but no letter in front of the number. The 80k numbers above have a letter as do the 360k numbers. What am I missing?

    The factory threw out all the shipping records decades ago but they were saved by Roy Jinks. For a modest fee, he will look up your serial number and provide you the shipping date, how it left the factory and to where it was shipped. Once in a while, he can even tell you to whom it was shipped. S&W did not ship in numerical sequence.

    The number on the butt may be drilled thru by the factory for installation of a lanyard swivel but is re-stamped on the grip frame, under the left stock. Factory-installed swivels are always 1/10” forward of center. The pre-war serial # on the butt reads with barrel to the right including I frame serial numbers on the fore strap.

    Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! I believe the serial is S299xxx. It is better to take the serial from the bottom of the butt frame since that is the official serial. However, some S&W revolvers have the serial in the yoke cut, like yours. Your gun was made in 1967.
