Winter's Bone is a stark, almost documentary-like movie about a poor teenage girl named Ree in the Ozarks who supports her near-catatonic mother and two younger siblings during her meth-cooking father's many brushes with the law.
The title comes from an old Appalachian expression - "like a dog digging after a winter's bone" - indicating someone who, like Ree Dolly, is on a search or quest for something and will not give it up.
Debra Granik's Winter's Bone is one of those movies -- like last year's inner-city down-a-thon, "Precious" -- that can't quite make a distinction between profundity and plain old bleakness. See all 38 reviews on Metacritic.com
WINTER'S BONE is a chilling portrayal of the search for truth buried deep beneath the bitter reality of rural poverty in America. Haunting in its authenticity, director and co-writer Debra Granik's film is part Ozarks gothic, part Shakespearean tragedy, and all American independent filmmaking.
