The episode flashes back to 15 years in the past when Mellie and Fitz are newlyweds staying in Fitz's father's home. Fitz's father Big Jerry introduces them to Cyrus Beene and they begin grooming Fitz for his political career. Fitz and his father clash and Cyrus starts to leave after Fitz says he will not use his military record for political gain.
Princess Emily was having an affair with her bodyguard, making Prince Richard a suspect. After persuasion from Olivia, Fitz attends Mellie's swearing in. Mellie offers to stand by Fitz and pretend that he didn't cheat on her if he apologizes. He says no, and tells her he wants a divorce. Fitz tells Olivia that he asked Mellie for a divorce.
It is possible that Mellie resents Olivia's status, due to her having a career and Fitz's love. In season two, after Fitz survives an assassination attempt, they hate each other more than ever, with Fitz now insistent on getting a divorce and Mellie beginning to overstep the bounds of her position's authority.
Fitz gets on the Marine One helicopter, leaving a sad Olivia behind. Back at OPA, Olivia, Quinn, Huck and Charlie investigate on who was the high-ranking VIP who ordered Mellie's assassination. Olivia soon realizes that Luna Vargas is the one who was behind everything that happened to Francisco, to Mellie and to Cyrus.
Olivia gets to know Captain Jake Ballard, who works with the leader of B613, Rowan, who orders Jake to get close to Olivia. At the end of the season, Mellie gives Fitz an ultimatum, either he becomes loyal to her, or she goes on national television and reveals Fitz's affair with Olivia. Fitz chooses Olivia, which makes Mellie reveal the affair.
Hal explains to Mellie that Olivia is in the hospital and Fitz is watching over her. Fitz brings Olivia clothes and Olivia yells at him to leave. They argue about the election and Olivia tells Fitz she loves him. Fitz asks for another chance, they kiss, and Olivia leaves. Fitz returns to Mellie at the White House, who tells him she is leaving ...
