Indigenous peoples in Canada (also known as Aboriginals) [2] are the Indigenous peoples within the boundaries of Canada. They comprise the First Nations , [ 3 ] Inuit , [ 4 ] and Métis , [ 5 ] representing roughly 5.0% of the total Canadian population .
Métis are a people descended of marriages to First Nations and Inuit of the region of North America that is now Canada. There are three distinctive groups of aboriginal people recognised in the Canadian Constitution Act, 1982, sections 25 and 35. The three groups of indigenous inhabitants in Canada are the First Nations, Inuit and Métis.
The first Metis politicians elected to the House of Commons were Pierre Delorme and Angus McKay, elected as Conservative party MPs in 1871. The very first First Nations parliamentarian is Leonard Marchand. There have been 46 Indigenous persons who have served as Members of Parliament, as well as 21 who have been named Senators.
The Alberta Federation of Metis Settlements, now Metis Settlements of Alberta, was formed in 1975 as the umbrella organization to unite all eight settlement councils. Different Métis groups attempted to combine the joint influences of the Manitoba Métis Federation, the Métis Nation of Alberta, and Métis Nation Saskatchewan.
