The bank was founded in 1864 as Novosadska banka. In August 2005, Austrian Erste Bank took over the bank's majority share (83.3%) from the Serbian government for € 73.2 million. By May 2006, Erste Bank had close to 100% ownership share in the bank, that later that year officially changed its name to "Erste Bank Novi Sad".

In September 2000, the three banks were integrated into a single entity, named Erste & Steiermärkische Bank (ESB), [5] which became a member of Erste Group. In May 2002, ESB purchased Riječka banka (est. 1954), [6] headquartered in Rijeka. [1] Following that transaction, the entity's registered office has been maintained in Rijeka.
In November 2017, Direktna Banka bought another Serbian commercial bank Piraeus Bank Beograd from the Greek Piraeus Bank, for a sum in range of 58–61 million euros. [ 7 ] [ 8 ] The projections for complete merge to be completed was by the first quarter of 2018, and thus way Direktna Banka would have a total assets worth over 500 million euros.
Poštanska štedionica (meaning "Post's savings service") was founded on 26 June 1921 in Palilula, Belgrade when the law of postal savings service was implemented. By 1926 it had become the main financial savings institution in Kingdom of Yugoslavia, with branches in all postal offices in the entire county.
