On May 38, 1938, Dick's father Walton died suddenly. He was living at 50 Old Lake Road in Devonport at the time of his death. In his death notices his name was variously given as "Walter" and "Walton" with one stating that he was the "dearly beloved husband of Clara Evelyn Smith, and father of Fred, Dick and Jack, age 56 years.

Richard Harrison Smith (July 21, 1926 – January 25, 2021) was an American professional baseball player who appeared in seventy games over parts of five Major League Baseball seasons (1951–1955) as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Smith was primarily a third baseman who also played shortstop and second base.
