The Thoroughbred is a distinct breed of horse, although people sometimes refer to a purebred horse of any breed as a thoroughbred. The term for any horse or other animal derived from a single breed line is purebred.
NBC gained the broadcast rights to the Breeders' Cup from its inception in 1984. The network ran the race until 2005, when ESPN signed an eight-year television contract to broadcast the race starting in 2006. In 2012, NBC regained the broadcast rights for the Breeders' Cup.
Fox Sports returned to horse racing in 2014 with a two-year agreement with The Jockey Club for up to 10 races on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes. [6] In 2016, Fox Sports reached an agreement with the New York Racing Association (NYRA) for coverage of 40 summer races from Saratoga Race Course on Fox Sports 2. It is dedicated to the improvement of Thoroughbred breeding and racing and fulfills that mandate by serving many segments of the industry through its subsidiary companies and by supporting numerous industry initiatives.
Other tracks offer Quarter Horse racing and Standardbred horse racing, or combinations of these three types of racing surfaces. Racing with other breeds, such as Arabian horse racing, is found on a limited basis. American Thoroughbred races are run at a wide variety of distances, most commonly from 5 to 12 furlongs (0.63 to 1.50 mi; 1.0 to 2.4 km).
When ESPN discontinued its horse racing coverage in 2012, Bailey moved to NBC. Bailey's final mount as a jockey would actually come on October 18, 2008, at Santa Anita in the "Living Legends Race", in which he joined seven fellow retired Hall of Fame riders to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Breeders' Cup.
