"Sixty Minute Man" is an R&B record released on Federal Records in 1951 by the Dominoes. [1] It was written by Billy Ward and Rose Marks and was one of the first R&B hit records to cross over to become a hit on the pop chart. It is regarded as one of the most important of the recordings that helped generate and shape rock and roll. [2]
Billy Ward (born Robert L. Williams, September 19, 1921, Savannah, Georgia, died February 16, 2002, Inglewood, California [2]) grew up in Philadelphia, the second of three sons of Charles Williams and Cora Bates Williams, and was a child musical prodigy, winning an award for a piano composition at the age of 14. [3]
He was present for the recording of "Sixty Minute Man" for Federal Records, produced by Ralph Bass. [ 2 ] Billy Ward and his Dominoes was one of the top R&B vocal groups in the country, garnering more popularity than the Clovers , the Ravens , and the Five Keys , largely due to McPhatter's fervent, high-pitched tenor.
Federal issued such classics as The Dominoes' "Sixty Minute Man", and "Have Mercy Baby" [2] as well as Hank Ballard & The Midnighters' "Work with Me, Annie" [3] which was opposed immediately by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) but went on to be an enormous hit. [4]
Billy Ward felt a stage name would better fit the Dominoes' image, hence Jackie Wilson. Before leaving the Dominoes, McPhatter coached Wilson on the sound Billy Ward wanted for his group, influencing Wilson's singing style and stage presence.
