Gerbera (/ ˈ dʒ ɜːr b ər ə / JUR-bər-ə or / ˈ ɡ ɜːr b ər ə / GUR-bər-ə) L. is a genus of plants in the Asteraceae (Compositae) family. The first scientific description of a Gerbera was made by J. D. Hooker in Curtis's Botanical Magazine in 1889 when he described Gerbera jamesonii, a South African species also known as Transvaal daisy or Barberton daisy.
Scotts was founded in 1868 by Orlando M. Scott as a premium seed company for the U.S. agricultural industry. In the early 1900s, the company began a lawn grass seed business for homeowners, and in 1924, became the first company to ship grass seed products directly to stores. Prior to 1924, Scotts products were only available through the mail. [5]
Gerbera jamesonii is a species of flowering plant in the genus Gerbera belonging to the basal Mutisieae tribe within the large Asteraceae (or Compositae) family. [1] It is indigenous to South Eastern Africa and commonly known as the Barberton daisy, [2] the Transvaal daisy, and as Barbertonse madeliefie or Rooigousblom in Afrikaans.
Gerbera ambigua is an acaulescent tufted perennial herb with thickened woody rootstock and naked flowering scapes up to 35 cm high. Leaves are very variable, usually petiolate, elliptical or oblanceolate , 5–8 cm long and 2.5–3.5 cm wide, thinly hairy above and white- or yellow-felted beneath.
A seed rate of about 100 kg of seed per hectare (2 bushels per acre) is typical, though rates vary considerably depending on crop species, soil conditions, and farmer's preference. Excessive rates can cause the crop to lodge, while too thin a rate will result in poor utilisation of the land, competition with weeds and a reduction in the yield .
Some examples are Chrysanthemum, Gerbera, Calendula, Dendranthema, Argyranthemum, Dahlia, Tagetes, Zinnia, and many others. [45] Pseudogynoxys chenopodioides is used as an ornamental plant for its bright orange flowers. [46] Many species of this family possess medicinal properties and are used as traditional antiparasitic medicine. [23]
