The mitotic index is a measure of cellular proliferation. [1] It is defined as the percentage of cells undergoing mitosis in a given population of cells. Mitosis is the division of somatic cells into two daughter cells. Durations of the cell cycle and mitosis vary in different cell types. An elevated mitotic index indicates more cells are dividing.
Mitotic counting has also been shown in multiple studies to have prognostic value in breast cancer, where a lower count of mitotic cells correlates with a more favorable outcome, and thus has been incorporated into part of the histological grading system.
Bostock DE, et al. performed a study of cats that had fibrosarcomas excised and were followed for a minimum of three years, or until death. Two factors, tumor site and mitotic index, were found to be of prognostic significance, but tumor size, duration of growth, and histologic appearance were not.

The mitotic figures are rare. Spread throughout the epithelium and connective tissue are spherical amorphous calcifications. Variants include the clear cell CCEOT; whose cells have clear cytoplasms. The incidence is low, with 15 cases of CCEOT reported. [2] However, another study has indicated that approximately 8% of CEOTs contain clear cells. [3]
These DNA kits for dogs give you way more information than your dog’s breed composition. Many of the kits can be upgraded to include more health and trait testing or allergy and age tests.
A recent study has shed light on the cognitive abilities of dogs, demonstrating that they can associate specific words with objects. Conducted at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary, this ...
