Richmond, Indiana is on the East Fork of the Whitewater River and is the most significant town in the river valley, containing most of the population of the valley. The West Fork of the river is paralleled by State Road 121 from Connersville to 5 miles (8 km) west of Brookville, thence by U.S. Route 52 to the Ohio River.
Brookville contains the confluence of the east and west forks of the Whitewater River; the East Fork forms a portion of the eastern boundary of the town.Brookville is also at the southern end of Brookville Lake, impounded in 1974 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

In 1836 the new state of Indiana approved funds to build the Whitewater Canal, following the river from Lawrenceburg, Indiana, all the way to Hagerstown, Indiana, 76 miles (122 km).
The Whitewater Canal was built based on an 1834 survey conducted by Charles Hutchens. [2] The design called for a canal seventy six miles long starting at Nettle Creek near Hagerstown and following the river valley through Connersville, Brookville and into Harrison, Ohio, then back into Indiana to finish at Lawrenceburg.
